As usual I would expect this MR to target v2024dev3 initially, and after it is merged a set of backports.

@sudarshan just to avoid misunderstandings I am waiting for this MR to be ready. It has been updated to target v2024pre, but it has not been rebased. If you see the commit list, there are several commits that should not be part of this MR.
