By having the helper exit with a distinctive exit-status, we can effectively report back to the test "if I was going to delete DIRECTORY/unlink-on-usr2, I would have done so by now". This means we don't have to wait an arbitrary 5 seconds (in slow mode) or 0.2 seconds (otherwise); we can just wait until the helper has exited, and if the file is still there, then it has failed to delete the file as expected.
